Announcement:
Thank you to everyone who participated in the NASA SMD Wildfire Stakeholder Engagement Workshop and Breakout Groups! The discussions were very engaging and informative.
Note, this event has already occurred, however, please see the post workshop recordings and materials below.
Workshop Overview:
NASA SMD Wildfire Project Long-term Goal: Integration of information and capabilities to support timely decision making and operations for pre-, during, and post-fires. New science and technology are needed to anticipate and manage the new reality of extreme fires in a warming world.
Workshop Purpose:
- To hear wildfire management stakeholders articulate their visions for successful wildfire management.
- Create and strengthen the diverse interdisciplinary community through areas of technology, social science, commercialization, geography, land and resource management, ecosystem and land planning, health and air quality, risk and resilience assessment, and more.
- To identify the following:
- Barriers the community has in integrating science, technology, and knowledge.
- Where NASA can help enable collaborative programs and partnerships across the fire lifecycle, including preparedness and adaptation, response, and recovery.
- Key opportunities and priorities to make progress in pre-, during, and post-fire.
- Partnerships and programmatic activities to guide near term action.
Workshop Breakdown: This was a two-day workshop. Day 1 focused on understanding the issues and needs of the Wildfire Management community and Day 2 prioritized those issues and needs through interactive breakout groups.
Workshop Expected Outcome: Identify the key priorities for pre-, during, and post-fire where NASA SMD can make the largest impact.
Ideal Workshop Participant: Decision makers, fire managers, and those that provide timely data, information, and/or tools to decision makers.
Workshop Summary and Key Findings:
The workshop was comprised of a series of expert panel discussions and breakout groups that addressed different aspects of pre-, active, and post-fire management. The primary findings and emerging themes from those sessions are presented in the NASA Science Mission Directorate (SMD) Wildfire Stakeholder Engagement Workshop: Summary and Key Findings document. Please see the document linked below.

Workshop Recordings:
NOTE: To ensure robust and candid discussions, we did not record the breakout groups. That being said, NASA SMD produced a workshop summary that includes what NASA learned in the breakout groups. The current draft of the document is linked above.
