UAM Airspace Management

Researching and developing new airspace concepts and technologies towards sustainable and scalable UAM operations

Our Goal

Urban Air Mobility, or UAM, aims to reshape the future through bold innovations. As electrically powered aircraft begin to increase in numbers, the airspace above cities and rural areas will gradually become dense and complex. Working with industry and the FAA, NASA is researching and developing new airspace concepts and technologies that will enable a high level of operational density and complexity to ensure safe, secure, reliable, and predictable UAM operations.

Benefits

The benefits of an airspace system transformation via new concepts and technologies include:

  • Enabling initial UAM operations to safely scale as demand increases
  • Demonstrating integration with air traffic control for early UAM operations
  • Community informed requirements for safe operations
