TFRSAC Bi-Annual Meeting

The Tactical Fire Remote Sensing Advisory Committee (TFRSAC) is a collaborative partnership between NASA and the US Forest Service (USFS). TFRSAC was created as an open forum to highlight, facilitate and demonstrate evolved and evolving technologies that increase the information content and timeliness of Earth Observations remote sensing data to support all phases of wildland fires.

The primary focus areas of TFRSAC are to demonstrate evolved and evolving technologies for increasing the information content and timeliness of earth resource data collected for wildfires, including:

  • Development and demonstration of improved and emerging airborne platform capabilities (manned and UAS).

  • Demonstrate new sensor capabilities for enhanced fire discrimination.

  • Demonstrate new data communication capabilities / automated processing for real-time data distribution from sensors (airborne sensor data to end-user communities on ground).

  • Develop and demonstrate Collaborative Decision Environment (CDE) capabilities to effect improvements to tactical fire decision support systems.

The TFRSAC is a “Community of Practice” (CoP) which focuses on sharing best practices and creating new knowledge to advance the wildland management domain of professional practice. Interaction on an ongoing basis is an important part of this, and to meet those objectives the TFRSAC meets twice each year (Spring and Fall) to discuss the developments and results of ongoing investigations for new and evolving capabilities that support improved fire observation. The bi-annual meeting agendas and presentations are open-access and shared with the greater community.

NASA ARMD Wildfire Management Workshop

Following the Bi-Annual Meeting, NASA’s TFRSAC and ARMD co-hosted a Wildfire Management Workshop. Please see the details below.

NASA ARMD Wildfire Management Workshop

NASA’s Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate (ARMD), in collaboration with Space Technology Mission Directorate (STMD) and Science Mission Directorate (SMD), hosted a workshop to understand the comprehensive needs of wildfire management. The workshop focused on needs within the three phases of the fire season: pre-fire season, during fire season and actual fire mitigation, and post-fire season. We considered the needs of the various stakeholders and operators who are involved in wildfire management planning, fire suppression, and post-fire analysis. Our interest spanned (and continues to do so) near-term (< 3 years), mid-term (3-7 years), and long-term (10+ years) needs.

NASA has a history of contributions related to remote sensing, instrumentation, mapping, data fusion, and predictions. Furthermore, NASA’s aeronautics community has possible contributions to manage the actual suppression and mitigation efforts through decision support tools for airspace operations coordination that would reduce the human workload during suppression operations.

The goals of the workshop were to understand the state of the art in wildfire management and to identify the needs and challenges of stakeholders at various decision cycles from planning, prediction, detection, tracking, mitigation, and post-fire remedial efforts. These needs reflected the various agencies and roles that are involved in wildfire management. NASA is using this input to inform potential contributions towards research, development, testing, and implementation opportunities to improve the state of the art in wildfire management.

Our primary goal was to understand the needs of the wildfire management stakeholders, so the format of the workshop included breakout sessions focused on specific topics.
