Upcoming Tech Talks

October 16th, 2023 at 1PM Eastern

Please join us for another in a series of ULI Tech Talks presented by universities conducting research through ARMD’s University Leadership Initiative (ULI). Forward the calendar invite to any potentially interested parties.

Topic: Large-scale multidisciplinary design, analysis, and optimization of urban air mobility vehicle concepts

Presenting Speakers and their Affiliation:

  • Dr. John Hwang, University of California San Diego

Summary of the Talk:

This talk will provide an overview of an ongoing University Leadership Initiative led by the University of California San Diego (2021-2024). This ULI aims to advance vehicle design for urban air mobility (UAM) through full-configuration, large-scale multidisciplinary design, analysis, and optimization (MDAO). UAM vehicles represent a significant departure from the design of any existing aircraft or rotorcraft, which means that traditional, empirically based sizing and design methods are ineffective. Our ULI addresses this gap by enabling algorithms that can efficiently optimize hundreds or more design variables given system-level models of UAM vehicles. To this end, our team is creating novel computational design methods, advancing modeling capabilities, and demonstrating the solution of complex design optimization problems. The resulting technologies are being transferred to the broader community through an integrated suite of open-source software for aircraft design optimization. This talk will detail the specific goals of our ULI and present our accomplishments to date.
